Covenant
Expectations (April 7)
"It
was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them"
The
disciples may have held off sailing earlier, because they were only 3
or 4 miles out into the water somewhere between 3 and 6 AM in the
morning. We know they at least waited until dark. The disciples
wanted Jesus to meet up with them. Perhaps, He would catch up to
them on shore. When that didn't happen, maybe he would catch up with
them in a boat a little later.
"A
great wind was blowing" and their ride across the sea in the
depth of night was hindered. Jesus finally came to them, but not as
they expected. He walked on the water to them. Because of the
unprecedented appearance, they thought the Lord was a ghost on the
water, but He soon identified Himself.
The
will of the Lord was to go, and He sent them. The winds turned
contrary. The disciples knew Jesus could not come to them, because
the wind would prevent a second boat from catching them. Yet, Jesus
came to them anyway, even if it meant walking on the water to do so.
Christ is faithful.
We
may well want God to show up to the point of our assumption and
willingness delay in launching His will. Those kind of expectations
tend to go unfulfilled. However, neither Hell nor high water, wind
or storm, can stop your Savior from coming to you, when need Him.
God
has a plan. God has made promises. Both of them work together.
God's plan is served by God's covenant, as God's covenant leads us
through God's plan. The Lord's will is supported by the Lord's
supply. The Children of God will never be forsaken! We are joined to
Him a covenant fellowship together.
Don't
allow the darkness of the world you see cloud your judgment about
real home in God's Kingdom. The sun in the sky may have set before
your expectations have been met. However the Sun of righteousness
has arisen with healing in His wings. He meets and exceeds covenant
expectations. He meets us abundantly at our point of need.
CONTEXT:
John
6:16-20
NKJV Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea,
(17) got into the boat, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And
it
was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them.
(18) Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing. (19) So
when they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking
on the sea and drawing near the boat; and they were afraid. (20)
But He said to them, "It is I; do not be afraid."
